About me
Hi! I’m Kathryn Walters.
I’m a practice-based design researcher in the field of textile design, and have recently completed my PhD studies at the Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås. My research explores the development of textiles with transformative behaviour, especially behaviour that results in three-dimensional form. This approach sees textiles as systems with responsive properties, arises from the complex interaction of material properties and behaviour and textile structure. My process embraces the use of industrial jacquard looms as an extension of weaving as craft. I love puzzles and solving problems, and that’s how I approach my textile design
I learned to weave at the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria (Australia), before being introduced to power-loom weaving on both shaft and jacquard looms during my MFA in Textile Design. I’m a member of Critical Textile Topologies, and have worked on a number of collaborations, including with Bio-Inspired Textiles.
I am currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture and Design at IE University, Spain.
